International procurement can help companies reduce costs and access advanced technologies and high-quality products from overseas. However, compared with domestic procurement, international procurement also involves various risks. In recent years, changes in international relations, exchange rates, logistics, and trade policies have made stable global procurement more challenging.

One of the major risks in international procurement is political and policy risk. Changes in international relations may lead to changes in tariffs, import and export regulations, or trade policies. As a result, a procurement channel that has been stable for many years may suddenly become unavailable. Economic sanctions and export restrictions can also prevent companies from purchasing products from certain countries or regions.

Another important risk is foreign exchange risk. International transactions often involve different currencies, so changes in exchange rates can directly affect procurement costs. For example, if a company’s local currency becomes weaker against the supplier’s currency, the actual cost of purchasing the same products may increase. In long-term contracts, significant exchange-rate changes between the signing date and the payment date may also reduce the company’s profit.

Supplier risk is another major issue. If a company chooses an overseas supplier only because of its low price without carefully examining its production capacity, financial condition, quality management, and delivery performance, problems may occur later. Poor product quality, delayed delivery, or unexpected supply interruptions can have a direct impact on the company’s production. In particular, excessive dependence on a single supplier can make the supply chain more vulnerable.

To reduce these risks, companies should first establish a careful supplier selection and evaluation system. Price should not be the only consideration. Companies should also evaluate suppliers based on their financial stability, production capacity, product quality, delivery performance, previous business experience, and compliance with relevant laws and regulations. In addition, supplier evaluation should not stop after the initial selection. Regular evaluations are necessary to identify potential problems at an early stage.

Another effective approach is diversifying procurement sources. Companies should avoid relying too heavily on one supplier or one country. Instead, they can establish relationships with multiple suppliers and prepare alternative sources of supply. If a natural disaster, political conflict, transportation problem, or trade restriction affects one supplier, the company can switch to another supplier. This can improve the stability and flexibility of the supply chain.

Contract management is also essential in international procurement. Procurement contracts should clearly specify product quality, quantity, price, delivery time, payment conditions, and responsibilities in case of a breach. In addition, contracts should address force majeure, intellectual property rights, and methods for resolving disputes. When exchange-rate fluctuations are significant, companies can also include price-adjustment clauses to reduce the financial impact of currency movements.

Furthermore, companies need to establish a system for early risk identification. They should continuously monitor international political developments, exchange rates, transportation conditions, and changes in trade policies. With the development of digital technology, companies can improve supply-chain visibility and monitor potential risks more efficiently. Early identification allows companies to prepare alternative solutions before a serious disruption occurs.

In my view, future international procurement should not focus only on purchasing products at the lowest possible price. Stability, flexibility, and long-term reliability should also be important factors when companies evaluate suppliers. A supplier with a slightly higher price may still provide greater long-term value if it offers stable quality, reliable delivery, and flexible support during emergencies.

It is impossible to completely eliminate all risks in international procurement. However, companies can reduce the impact of these risks by identifying them in advance and preparing appropriate response strategies. In the future, successful international procurement will require companies to balance cost efficiency with risk management and supply-chain resilience. Therefore, building a flexible and diversified procurement system will become increasingly important for companies operating in the global market.

With the development of globalization, many companies purchase raw materials, components, and products from suppliers in different countries.
